The Taichung MRT Green Line (as of 2026 the only metro line in Taichung) runs in a half-circle around Taichung and can be a fun way to explore the city. Here’s what to see, do, and eat at various MRT stops in Taichung, Taiwan.

(I haven’t included every stop in this list because some metro stops are mostly residential areas without much else to offer.)
You can use an Easy Card (available for purchase at convenience stores) to ride the metro or you can buy tokens from the machines in the metro station. If you need help, there are always attendants on hand.

MRT HSR Taichung Station
This station is a jumping off point for many Taichung tourists. The HSR is a great way to travel around Taiwan, but the station is a unique place to visit as well. The station itself, a huge modern building, is a great place to pick up souvenirs at the many food stands and little shops. I particularly like the Taiwan Railways souvenir store, which has a lot of unique toys, memorabilia and gifts. It’s great for rail fans, but it also has a lot of interesting nostalgic items and Taiwanese-themed gifts for the average tourist too.

If you want to stay in the area, but want to get out of the station, try the Zhi Gao Zun hike. It’s a short taxi or Uber ride away from the station to see a beautiful nature trail.
There’s also 聚奎居, which cost 100 NTD for tourists. It’s a beautiful old house. And if you want a unique photoshoot, you can rent traditional clothing here and take photos in the beautiful surroundings. The easiest way to get here is also by taxi or Uber.
While Rainbow Village isn’t my favorite thing to do in Taichung, it’s also a short taxi ride from the HSR station, so if it’s on your must-do list, then this is an easy way to check it off the list.
One more convenient thing to know about the Taichung HSR Station is that there is a bus station attached with links to lots of famous nearby attractions. For example, you can easily catch a bus from the Taichung HSR Bus Station to Lihpao Land or Lukang. Simply follow the signs to the bus station. There is usually a volunteer there willing to help you get to where you need to go.

Wuri
The Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation Wuri Brewery is within walking distance of the Wuri MRT station. The brewery’s shops are open from 9am-6pm every day, and offer some unusual types of alcohol. If you want a tour, you need to call and book in advance.
Daqing
Letian park is a fun spot if you have kids. It’s also good for kite flying or watching others fly kites on the weekends or busy holidays.
Fengle Park
Fengle Sculpture Park is a beautiful place to check out some art and relax in a natural setting. Surrounding Fengle Sculpture Park is a lot of delicious restaurants, including some delicious duck restaurants. My personal favorite is this place. https://maps.app.goo.gl/eq9x3BGB8zXJmQXs6

Taichung’s first Costco is also located here. At one point it was the busiest Costco in the world. There’s also a nearby Decathlon.
Nantun
A busy MRT stop, this one is located just off Wuquan Road, which is a huge road filled with large shops and restaurants. Some highlights are this place (a large toy shop), Power of Meat Taichung Wenxin Wuquan West Branch (a large yakiniku chain restaurant), and Sailor Reptile (a reptile shop). Large and busy, this road isn’t the most relaxing place in Taichung, but if you want to eat something delicious or have an unusual item you want to buy, it might be a good place to stop.
Wenxin Forest Park
Wenxin Forest Park is a big beautiful park in the middle of the city. It also has a large outdoor concert area, which regularly holds free concerts and events, especially in the summer.

Behind Wenxin Forest Park is a surprisingly large cluster of clubs, KTV spots, and bars for Taiwan, so if you’re looking for a night out, this might be a good place to stop.
Taichung’s IKEA is also nearby.
Shui-An Temple
There’s a large Carrefour just outside this stop which houses an array of reasonably priced outlet shops. It can be a great place to pick up some Adidas or Nike for cheap.
Nearby on Shizheng Road is a cluster of large restaurants/bars including Baho Yakiniku Restaurant, Le Ble d’Or, and 本大股燒肉 私廚燒肉. So if the club isn’t your scene, but you still want to enjoy a nice night out, Shui-An Temple stop could be a good one to hit up.
City Hall
Possibly the busiest stop on the MRT line (besides the HSR station) City Hall has a lot to offer, especially in the summer when there are events happening almost all season long.
First are the long beautiful parks outside city hall where you’ll find joggers running and families relaxing on weekends.

After that there is the National Taichung Theater, a beautiful spot that’s worth exploring for the building alone, even if you’re not a theater fan.

Then there are the malls Shin Kong Mitsukoshi and Top City which house everything from souvenir shops to restaurants, and bookstores to cinemas. Just past the two malls is Maple Garden, which is worth visiting if you’re in the area for the striking nature surrounded by skyscrapers.

Wenhua Senior High School
Being right next to a senior high school means that there is a huge stationary store right outside this station, which can be a fun place to pick up souvenirs.

Another great souvenir location near here is Junn Mei bakery which in my opinion has the best pineapple cakes in Taichung.
Wenxing Zhongqing
This is another busy MRT stop which opens up onto an extremely busy, rather unpleasant intersection; however, there are some good reasons to stop in the area.

First, there’s a large morning market called Shuinan Market just north of this stop where you can buy fresh produce but also find cheap, unique souvenirs and try some quick delicious Taiwanese snacks.
Speaking of delicious, the alleyways in this area hide a surprising amount of yummy restaurants in tiny, easily overlooked old houses. I recommend Kichi (souffle pancakes and brunch), Jin Pang (Korean fusion food), and Lucky Pancake (Taiwanese breakfast) for starters. Keep in mind that all of these shops are small and family-owned, so don’t expect fast service in English, but do expect unique homemade treats.

Finally Tianjin Road is a fairly easy walk from this MRT stop. Tianjin Road turns into a large Lunar New Year’s market in the weeks leading up to CNY. If you’re in the area around Lunar Near Year, this market is an absolute must.

Wenxin Chongde
A huge commercial shopping and restaurant area, you can’t shake a stick without hitting a good restaurant near this MRT stop.
Nearby is also the tiny but beautiful Folklore Park with traditional looking buildings and a beautiful pond perfect for a few scenic photos.

Siwei Elementary School
Beitun Children’s Park and a branch of the Taichung library are located here. If you have kids, then this is a great stop. The park is huge and full of fun play equipment. The library even has toys for rent.

Also nearby is the Yide Mansion, a beautiful old building that currently houses some small restaurants, an ice cream shop, and a cafe.

Sonzhu
This MRT stop is located in a large quiet park. There’s not much to see outside the park, but if you’re looking for peace and quiet, then Songzhu can be a good stop.

There’s also a great cycling path here that goes underneath the elevated rail line. You can rent a Ubike at Songzhu station and go for a great ride here.
Jiushe
This MRT station has a unique set up for groups wanting to practice dancing, so if you come on the weekends, you’ll definitely see dancers practicing in the station.
Just outside the MRT station is a large, new cluster of restaurants. There’s a huge variety here, everything from a traditional Hakka restaurant to Thai food. It’s a great place to go with friends to try something new.

Zhongshan Night Market is a relatively new market in Taichung. It’s a great place to try every Taiwanese snack imaginable.
Also nearby is the Xuanzhuan Flower Market which is a large two-story market, perfect for anyone with a green thumb.
This MRT stop is also a great place to catch a bus to the Dakeng Hiking Trails. Bus 922 will take you straight there in about 15 minutes.

Beitun Main Station
This area is mostly residential, but the biggest Taichung Costco is located here.
